Obsolescence childish

Sometimes websites need to get an overhaul. Like everything does. I myself need one every morning. Seems natural. Get a coffee and getting to work. But in the meantime, I really don’t want to see anyone looking at me. That might be the same when it comes to websites. When you are constructing something new, you have to shut down the old stuff first or at least make the old stuff not visible at all, so you can work in peace on something which is nicer and more comfortable. Depending on the so-called zeitgeist.

Developers know this and encourage their clients to put a maintenance page on their front page. For this purpose you can fall back to a default solution, which are mostly pretty boring and distracting, or you decide to entertain your visitors. Therefore, you can deliver something funny like the barbarian cabinet as on the former imgur 404-page, by the way my favorite 404-page ever.

About 3 years ago, so long before today, I decided to block my page with this handy WordPress Plugin (Password Protected) even though the actual intention was to imitate the barbarian cabinet. But this was way too weird to code myself.

So fortunately, even with this unpleasant experience, I got inspired by an SVG modifier which coincidental came to my eyes while browsing the web. Please don’t ask me for the page, I saw it long before today, and unfortunately I can only remember stuff that has happened within the last 12 month.

The component was built with the feComponentTransfer element, and playing with it is a pretty childish fun. So I implemented it on the front page of my private website. Feel free to fork it in case you use WordPress or just fiddle it:

Take a closer look. This has a constant motion and might attract your eyes, too. If you want to have something like this on your webpage, I would be pleased to provide you some customized implementation. This also works on backgrounds, but might be a little overwhelming.

Admitting that this is mainly a childish play, from a code perspective this is quite fascinating in my opinion. Loops, colors, and animations are relatively independent. This gives you a nice playground for creating a nice kind of digital artwork. There are cases for a sensible implementation on your side, surely.
